Rolling for Charity

Rolling for Charity

If you follow ttrpg creators on various platforms, you may be seeing some people using the tag #RollForCharity and talking about a charity drive. Well, the simple answer is that it’s because of the Second Annual TTRPGTok MSF Charity Drive. Now, this might look a little bit confusing, because there’s 5 different campaigns, 4 for each color of the Palestinian flag, as well as a solo team of Jordon Brown, who by far raised the most money last year.

How does this work?

This effort to raise funds for Doctors Without Borders isn’t just TTRPG creators making a handful of posts asking for money, though I wouldn’t blame you if that’s what you thought. We also know that raising money is more effective if the donors get something in return. So to that, there will be livestreams as well as rewards on tiltify for each team. For the Tabletop Titans (the white team, which I am on) you’ll find pdfs and physical copies of various games, as well as people donating their time to do consultations and run games for people in exchange for donations. Across the other teams you will find similar offers, as well as TTRPG merch, dice, and other nerdy goodies. Notably, for team Doom/Jordon Brown, you will be able to effect a livestreamed game featuring people such as Aabria Iyengar, Brennan Lee Mulligan, and Haley Whipjack.

How did this start?

So how did all of these people find each other and decide to make this project happen? Well a lot of that credit goes to Run-DMG. Back in December of 2023, he was looking for a way he could do more to help the people of Palestine. Coming to the conclusion that he could do more with others than he could on his own, he decided to start a charity drive with some other creators on TikTok, hence the name “TTRPGTok MSF Charity Drive”. Something you may not know, is that much of the TTRPGTok scene knows each other and regularly talks outside of TikTok. A lot of us are in various discords together and play games with one another both on stream and off. Because of this, a lot of people got involved incredibly quickly. Many people who had time or products to give opted to donate last year, and we ended up raising over $25,000. Because of that success, it was a nearly unanimous decision that we should do it again. While many of us would love to try and do this all year long, the reality is that it takes a lot of time and effort to organize something like this, and many of us are spending less time with our friends and family, and possibly even taking some time off of work to make this happen. So once or twice a year is probably about the limit, especially with participation in other charity drives like the ones being organized by JesTheHuman and Rue who is behind itch bundles like Trans Rights for West Virginia.

How can I help?

The simplest ways to help are to share this with as many people as possible, and donate if you can. However, if you would like to be more involved, and you happen to know a creator who is already in the drive, you can probably message them and offer products or services like Pro-GMing, performing in an actual play, art, dice, or games. This group is very accepting of anyone who wants to help and has a platform, even if it’s tiny. No matter how you decide to help, I hope you get out there, spread the word, and roll some dice to do some good in the world.
